Just a warning in case anybody else encounters this issue with Adobe. I have a desktop/perpetual license version of Lightroom (6). I bought the license and downloaded the installer directly from Adobe. Gtgraphics theme windows 10. This was back in 2015; I've been using the software without any issues for the past 4 years.

Yesterday, an error message popped up when I started Lightroom claiming that 'A recent scan of your Adobe software has determined it is non genuine. We're here to help fix it'. Oh really? My first thought was virus/scam, but upon further inspection it seemed to be actually from Adobe.
Adobe Non Genuine Software Message
“Adobe now runs validation tests and notifies people who are using non-genuine software. Our tests check for software tampering and invalid licenses,” Adobe explains. “This is a new service, designed to inform and protect our customers from the risks of non-genuine and counterfeit software,” the company adds.

After cumulatively spending 2+ hours on hold with Adobe support (no email support option provided, only phone or chat - not open on weekends), and several transfers, somebody from Adobe determined that my license is in fact valid, and that the message is some kind of error requiring a full reinstall. Someone from Adobe support accessed my computer by remote desktop, uninstalled Lightroom a did a clean install. Seems like the issue is resolved - except that all of my Lightroom preferences/settings/plugins are now gone.
Remove Genuine Software
So, the warning is: if this message pops up for you, BACK UP as many of your settings as possible before letting anybody from Adobe make any changes, because it sure takes a long time to get all of the preferences and plugins set up correctly again. And be prepared to spend multiple hours of your own time on hold and/or resolving it. What a fantastic way to treat long-term paying customers.
